On January 22, 2024, Razorpay, a leader in pushing ongoing improvements in UPI since 2017, announced the introduction of Instant Refunds on UPI transactions using Razorpay POS. By offering rapid reimbursements for unsuccessful UPI transactions within two minutes, this industry-first solution will enable businesses to give their consumers a more smooth in-store payment experience, leading to faster checkout times.
In India, UPI payments have quickly become the standard for digital payment acceptance. According to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI platform transactions surpassed the 100 billion milestone in 2023, hitting over 118 billion. This represents an astounding 60% increase from the 74 billion transactions made the year before. End customers have clearly adopted this technology widely in just six years, as evidenced by the fact that it already has over 300 million users. Nonetheless, companies are continuously looking for ways to resolve problems, especially when it comes to POS device-delayed transactions. These delays provide customers a bad experience, which could cost retailers money. Customers hesitate to retry the payment or choose an alternate method, frequently abandoning the purchase, when transactions are delayed and money is taken out of their account but not received by the seller. In addition to negatively affecting the uncertainty and dissatisfaction of customers, this increases merchant operating costs, which in turn affects their entire business.
53 percent of MSME shops cited internet problems and unsuccessful transactions as the two biggest barriers to using UPI transactions in their operations, according to a NeoGrowth survey performed in 2023. Rapid problem solving becomes essential in this situation and a crucial differentiator. To solve this issue, Razorpay has partnered with Razorpay POS to offer immediate refunds on UPI payments. The refund process, which used to take five to six business days, now takes a maximum of two minutes thanks to the fully automated system of the Razorpay POS device. The procedure is a quick try that ends in three seconds if it works. If it doesn't work, the algorithm tries three times in a row, giving up on a merchant's physical labor altogether and trying three times every five seconds.
Byas Nambisan, CEO of Razorpay POS, made the following statement on the industry-first solution: "Businesses need to have access to the right solution that can make this happen, end-to-end, given the growing preference towards providing omnichannel payment experiences." Our data indicates that five to fifteen percent of UPI transactions encounter a pending status, and thirty to forty percent of situations result in our merchants losing their business since the customer feels uneasy making a second payment over UPI or using any other means. Therefore, it was imperative that we stop this in its tracks by giving our merchants the authority to initiate these immediate reimbursements, improving client happiness, building confidence, and facilitating quicker checkouts. This new product highlights our commitment to innovation as we continue to shape the payments industry and reaffirms our mission to streamline money transfers.
The in-store payment landscape has been completely transformed by Razorpay POS, creating a plethora of new opportunities for companies of all kinds. Razorpay POS revealed in December 2023 that it had grown by an astounding 60% in FY’23, accounting for close to 10% of Razorpay’s total income. The platform's all-encompassing growth has simplified and eased in-store payments, adjusting to a changing business landscape where interacting with customers requires a hybrid strategy.
