"Wide range of uses" for a camera that perceives the world like an animal

An US research team at George Mason University has created gear and software that lets users record video as though it were shot from an animal's point of view.

The majority of animals perceive the environment differently than humans do because they each have a distinct collection of photoreceptors that are tailored to their ecological requirements and have sensitivities ranging from ultraviolet to infrared.

Because of this, every animal has a unique way of perceiving color, giving them a visual reality that is entirely distinct from our own.

To learn more about ecology, agriculture, and general animal behavior, how can we see the hidden world of animals from their point of view, because neither our eyes nor commercial cameras can capture these crucial nuances?

Researchers at the Virginia-based university assert that they have developed a tool to record films that correspond to the colors that animals perceive, offering a potential solution to this problem.

With assistance from the Blandy Experimental Farm at the University of Virginia and funding from the National Geographic Society and other George Mason departments, the researchers anticipate a variety of applications for these technologies.

They have made the software open source to aid with this, inviting a wide range of people to consider the radically diverse perspectives of these creatures, from farmers and outdoor enthusiasts to ecologists and natural history filmmakers.

How it functions : 

Multispectral photography, which records light in a variety of wavelengths, including the ultraviolet and infrared, was used to build the tools.

The camera captures video in four color channels: blue, green, red, and UV. These channels are processed based on our existing knowledge of the animal to present film as seen through its eyes.

The group produced a portable, 3D-printed gadget with a beam splitter to separate visible light from UV light, each of which is recorded by a separate camera.

When combined, the UV-sensitive cameras capture high-quality video, but they do not collect perceivable data when used alone. The video is aligned by algorithms, which then show the images from the perspectives of several animals.

The average, UV-sensitive avian and honeybee photoreceptor data were used in the study. But according to researchers, any organism can use the camera "as long as users supply data on photoreceptor sensitivity and those sensitivities overlap with the sensitivity of the camera system."

According to the university, the software is freely available for anybody to modify for their own purposes, and the hardware is made to work with cameras that are sold commercially.
