In a bold step forward, Amazon’s 2025 Devices & Services event redefined the smart home experience by centering on Alexa+, an ambient AI layer built to connect devices with more context and intelligence. At the event, the company launched a refreshed Echo family Echo Dot Max, Echo Studio, and updated Echo Show models powered by the new AZ3 and AZ3 Pro chips. These chips push more AI computations to the edge, reducing latency and enabling richer interactions without always needing to rely on cloud processing.
One of the standout announcements was the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, which brings a color e-ink display and low-latency stylus support to Kindle’s lineup for the first time. The device also incorporates AI-powered search capabilities, letting users quickly skim handwritten or typed notes. With deeper integration into Amazon’s service ecosystem, the Kindle can now better bridge reading, note-taking, and productivity workflows.
Amazon didn’t stop at gadgets. It also introduced new Ring security devices with 2K/4K resolution, features like “Retinal Vision” for smarter imaging, and Alexa+ visitor greetings. Blink also received upgrades, including the Blink Arc offering a 180° field of view. Together with the AI enhancements inside Alexa+, these devices aim to make homes not just connected, but perceptive.
This event marks a turning point: Amazon is no longer simply adding new models to its hardware line, but instead is weaving a more intelligent, device-agnostic system through its ecosystem. With Alexa+ acting as an overarching brain, devices will better cooperate, anticipate user needs, and respond with more nuance.
For smart home builders and DIYers, the new focus means future integrations might shift. Expect more local inference capacity (thanks to the AZ3 chips) and tighter inter-device communication. This opens opportunities for third-party devices to interoperate more fluidly, especially in privacy-sensitive or latency-sensitive scenarios.
